Childhood Obesity

 

We had students from Spring Hill College come visit us and talk about Childhood obesity, Blaise, Britney, and Libby. To begin the presentation, they showed us a Ted Talk given by Jamie Oliver. (Link above) Jamie Oliver is an English chef who has been preaching about reducing obesity in children. The main points of the video were as follows.

  • the percentage of obesity in children

  • how childhood obesity might affect a child future

  • reasons for childhood obesity - main street, fast foods and supermarkets - home, food culture and laziness - schools, cheap and affordable foods

  • how to prevent childhood obesity

  • death rates

 

The Presentation:

During their presentation, they discussed how body mass index; BMI, prevalence, sosceoecomonic status, and the hospital settings of patients affect their obesity levels. The chart to the left was used to show the obesity prevalence in each state in the USA.



The Sosceoeconomis levels of people can also affect their obesity levels. People in the lower to middle classes tend to be more likely to be obese, due to a lack of healthy food options and resources.


The health effects of being obese at a young age can be both physical and mental. While being overweight at a young age can cause a more likely chance to have further diseases while ageing, it also cause a shorter life span,
