Ben's Childhood
The movie Gifted Hands was about the brilliant brain surgeon Ben Carson and how he became a surgeon. Ben's childhood was difficult because he couldn't read or see as a kid, making him feel stupid. He felt out of place with the other student and was discriminated against by his teachers. His mother worked hard and provided him with everything he needed and encouraged him his whole life.
Ben's Collage Experience
Ben was given a scholarship to Yale, graduating third in his class. Ben's college years were difficult because he finds it hard to understand lectures, so he read and taught himself. Ben worked and studied hard and got a 97 on his final exam. During Medical School Ben applied for the Johns Hopkins University neurosurgery residency and was accepted.
Ben's Professional Life
At Ben's work, he is respected and looked up to. Ben is considered one of the best Pediatric neurosurgeons. All of Ben's coworkers trust and admire him, he is a friend to all. He is known for doing the . impossible and thinking outside the
. box.
The Conjoined Twins
The twins were conjoined by the head, with only connected blood vessels. Ben figured out a way to save both kids, operating with their hearts stopped to prevent a large amount of blood loss. He was prepared for every scenario that could possibly happen in this surgery, he had everyone in his operation room practice how the surgery should go to make sure there is no confusion. He gathered a team of 50 people consisting of an anesthesiology team, a cardiac surgeon team, a team of plastic surgeons, and a team of neurosurgeons. Thye started at 6 AM and ended at 2 AM, 22 hours later. They stopped the hearts for an hour, during the hour they separated blood vessels. Ben almost ran out of time, ending with seconds to spare. The operation was a success leaving both children alive.
