HEENT Lab

September 5th, 2024 By: Megan McDonough

This Week!

This week in interventions we began to discuss patient rights and common medical terminology. I learned many new prefixes for common medical terms and conditions. We presented our narrated slide shows this week, let’s just say my voice sounds so different on a recording. I also learned about HIPPA and the rights all patients are entitled to within a hospital setting. My week was cut short by a volleyball tournament in Montgomery. Therefore, I was unable to participate in the lab and I will be making it up next week.

The Lab

During my make-up lab, my classmate Hannah Baker and I practiced the HEENT inspection on each other. First, we were instructed to watch an informative video on what exactly HEENT is (link below). HEENT stands for head, nose, ear, nose, throat, and neck. This is a simple guide for what will be accomplished during the exam.

First, we started with an inspection of the head. We check for asymmetry, masses, or bruises. Then, we palpate the head, checking for tenderness or soreness.

Next, we inspect the eyes. Again, we check for symmetry in the eyebrows and the eyelashes and look for rashes, discoloration, or any thinning. Then, we pull down the eyelids to look directly at the eyes for color. After that, we checked pupillary responses with a penlight and checked sight using a visual chart. Then, we tested extraocular movement by asking the patient to follow our fingers with their eyes while also testing the visual fields.

Then, we examined the ears. We looked for irregularities and tested hearing with the Rinne Tuning Fork. Then we investigated the nose, sinuses, and mouth. Looking for all irregularities. Lastly, We palpated the neck and lymph nodes, checking for irregularities. Then we were finished with the inspection. This lab was super fun and interesting. I couldn't stop laughing with my friends while they palpated my head! I cannot wait for the next lab!
