This Week!
This week in Interventions we began the preparation for our Capstone Research Paper. I was able to research the medical history of Sports medicine, Nutritional Sciences, and Sports Psychology. Sports Medicine originated in the early Roman Empire, where every Gladiator was provided with personal Physicians. I found this extremely interesting and I cannot wait to continue my research. We also learned about a specific search engine called Google Scholar that I will be using as a tool to find accurate and reliable information for my research. I am super excited to start the paper and write about a medical field I am passionate about.
The Lab!
This week's lab was on Hemiplegia, which is the temporary or permanent paralysis after experiencing a stroke. We were tasked with the daily action of getting dressed. We were only allowed to use one arm, having the other arm and both legs completely limp. First, we were supposed to put on our socks and shoes. This took a significant amount of time and was harder than I expected it to be. Putting on a sock was difficult because I couldn’t use my foot or opposite hand to help. Then, putting on the shoe took even more effort, because I normally just shove my foot in there.
After putting on the socks and shoes, we were tasked with putting on an undershirt and a button-down. This took significantly longer than the shoes and socks! Trying to man over my “paralyzed” arm through the shirt hole was incredibly difficult and took me multiple tries. Once I was able to get it on, I began on the button-down. Which was easier at first, until I had to button it. Luckily, after struggling for a few buttons, I was given a button hook, which made it so much easier. The button hook loops around the button and pulls it through the buttonhole. With this tool, I was able to speedily finish buttoning the shirt. After I finished, I felt so accomplished. Until I had to take everything off.
