ToastMasters Fieldtrip

2025 Interventions Class!
2025 Interventions Class!

This week in Biomed we took a field trip to see a local ToastMasters meeting. This meeting just happened to be their 100-year anniversary. It was really cool to see the different aspects of public speaking within this club. they had multiple different opportunities for almost everyone to have a chance to speak. My favorite part was the table topics. This was when they were randomly called upon to answer a random question given by one of their peers. They were allotted only one minute to discuss their answer. While they spoke, other members of the club would take notes on their grammar, word usage, and the number of times they used what they call filler words. Filler words are words like ah, so, sorry, you know, and like. Going to this meeting will help me with my Biomed Capstone project in April because it really showed me the importance of taking your time, slowing down, and deliberately speaking.

Romeo Cupidon

This week, we also did a  Romeo Cupidon worksheet. This worksheet was a lot of fun for me because while being entertaining, it brushed up my memory of basic skills that I haven't practiced in a while. For instance calculating a pulse, heart rate, or different muscles in the body. I really enjoyed that it allowed us to create our own doctor name based on the first letters of our names. My name was Dr. Dumpling Sunbeam.  It was fun to deduce what was the diagnosis of this fake patient, similar to our Telemedical lab last week.

Guest Speaker

I was also able to sit in on a guest speaker from South Alabama in one of our other biomedical classes. This guest speaker specializes in nutrition and cancer research. It was very interesting to listen to her perspective on the importance of nutrition and its regard to cancer and its formation. I was able to get her email and I cannot wait to reach out and hopefully have an interview with her.
