Forensics Week, Day 2: ESD Dog

Sargent Grantham and Estie

Sgt. Laura Grantham from the Mobile County Sheriff's Office. Sgt. Grantham specializes in digital forensics, through data on phones and other electronics. Sgt. Grantham was selected by her superior and began training. She trained in Hoover Alabama for five weeks, her final last three days.

The study of digital Forensics is very important to catching criminals in all cases, especially child-sensitive ones. Estie, the ESD Electronic Storage Device seeker dog, is a secondary searcher. She is called to go to crime scenes and search for any electronic devices that can be documented as evidence. Estie smells the chemicals that are added to the circuit boards of all devices to prevent them from overheating. Since criminals' intelligence is increasing, flash drives can be found in the form of poker chips, toys, sprinklers, and sometimes hidden in walls.

Estie continues to practice mock searches every day because she is only allowed to get food after she completes her job. Sgt. Grantham will hide flash drives around her house or in the grass to stimulate Estie and keep her skills keen.
