Vet. Tec. Program at Coastal Alabama

Dr. Forester Coastal Alabama May 16th, 2023

ALL ABOUT THE FIELD

When Dr. Forester came to talk to my BioMed class, she talked about her career as a Veterinary Technician. She said that working in the veterinary field requires the doctor to know the anatomy of multiple species, which makes it a more difficult course of study than regular doctors. Some of the perks she mentioned were new cases every day, she's never bored, and she sees it as a puzzle. Since animals are unable to communicate their pain or feelings, it is up to the vet. to use the process of elimination using their observation skills, blood labs, tests, and the physical exam. Dr. Forester told my class to think of veterinary technicians as nurses, they do similar jobs as nurses in a regular doctor's office. Animals, such as dogs, go through a checkup similar to humans; weight check, physical exam, shots, etc.

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY:

The anatomy of some animals is very similar to that of a regular adult, however; some are very different. For example, a horse's shoulder blade is almost identical to a human's (besides the size). Although, a horse's hoof is more similar to one human finger.

In vet. school, they use fake animals, veins, shots, etc. to test their skills. Below, you will see many tools they use, including a laryngoscope, a surgery kit, and a fake dog vein (made from a pool noodle and fake hair).
