BioMed II Field Trip January 11th, 2023
The Medical Facilities
We began our field trip with a tour of the Coast Guard Clinic. They showed us the machines that they would use to test the patient's heart rate, lung capacity, hearing, and sight. This clinic only takes in veterans or current members of the coast guard. It is mandatory for the patients to pass all these tests to be able to fly. They are required to take these exams annually to ensure they are physically fit to fly or do their jobs. They showed us how they work certain machines, such as the EKG, Pulmonary function testing, and audiometric booth.

Flight Simulation
Next, they took us to my favorite part of this field trip. The flight simulators. These simulators are used to help teach training pilots how to fly and what to do in high-risk situations. The instructor is able to control all the factors of the plane, such as atmosphere,
weather, engine failure, and electricity. They
allowed us to fly in three different simulators,
he fixed-wing plane, the dolphin, and the
seahawk.
After we did the flight simulators, the lieutenant working the simulators allowed us to try on real fighter pilot headphones. These headphones are used to protect the pilot's eardrums from high pressure and to allow them to communicate with the base with ease. When you have these headphones on it makes hearing the people around you difficult, this is why the headphones have built-in microphones.
The Hangers
Finally, they took us to see the helicopters and planes we were "flying" in the simulators. They allowed us to walk through the plane, sit in the cabin of the plane, and sit in the pilot's seat. It was really cool to be able to see all these planes and aircraft in real life. I really enjoyed this experience and would love to do it again.
