When Mr. Jones came to talk to our BioMed 2 class this Monday, he discussed the topic of E-cigarettes and teens being the target consumer. He was able to take such a serious and depressing topic into a smooth and understandable conversation.
"The Simplicity of 2"s"
Mr. Jones started off the class by talking about if you are "real or fake?". Any item in the world is either real or fake, good or bad, truthful or deceitful. An E-cigarette is bad, fake, and deceitful.
William Camble
The CEO of a large tobacco company, William Camble stated that "the base of my business is high school students" nicotine and tobacco companies are purposely targeting youth. They design their products to be colorful, bright, and fruity to make them seem safer. They add things on the packaging to make it relate more to your childhood, things like balloons, animals, and bright colors. Even the location of these devices in the stores is strategic. They place these devices right next to the candy to make these deadly nicotine products seem just as safe as a TWIX bar. Mr. Jones stated that "90% start tobacco use at the age of 18, and 98% start at the age of 26". Once a young teenager starts tobacco, it's much harder for them to quit than someone with a fully developed brain.
