What Is a Concussion?
A concussion occurs when a large amount of trauma is acted onto the brain and causes the neurons to stretch. This allows for potassium and calcium to leak into the brain. This makes it incredibly hard for the person to do their jobs. This is why people with concussions experience memory loss and balance issues. While playing sports there is a 2-15% chance of an athlete getting a concussion.
How Do You Diagnosis a Concussion?
Since there are many signs of a concussion in a patient and the same symptoms are found in other injuries, the doctor must use something called a SCAT5. The SCAT5 is a standardized tool for evaluating concussions designed for use by physicians and licensed healthcare professionals. The SCAT5 tests eye movement, balance, memory, concentration, and comprehension.
Treatments for Concussions
initial rest for 24-48 hours
sub-symptom threshold exercise
Tylenol/NSAIDs
be held out of school and athletics
possible PT referral (balance) Eye movement test
What's the Big Deal About Concussions?
Concussions can worsen pre-existing conditions like ADD, depression, anxiety, and migraines. Having a concussion may prevent you from going to school and participating in athletics for long periods of time. Studies have also shown that people who have suffered from concussions have lower GPAs and are at a higher risk for mood disorders.
