Trauma Week Day 4: Mrs. Boone

By; Mrs Boone December 1st, 2022

Examining the Injury

Today Mrs. Elizabeth Boone came to speak to us about Physical Therapy, with her PT student Rachel. After our patient went through surgery, he is going to need physical therapy to regain strength in his leg.

Before Mrs. Boone begins treatment, she must examine the injury. She began by testing the knees' flexibility. She makes sure to test both knees to compare the "bad" leg to the "good" leg. When examining any joints they measure the flexibility in degrees. Connor's knee had about a 95-degree bend, while the average bend is 130 degrees. She will also test the strength and resistance of the knees. While testing Connors she noticed a shaky and unstable feeling, which leads her to believe he has an ACL tear.

While examining his knee and how it is bending, she notices it is only hitting about 95 degrees and not the normal of 130 degrees. After that, she tested the ankles.

Continuing down the leg, she will test the circumference of the mid-thigh ankle, the mid-foot base of the metatarsals, and the patella on both legs. By comparing these measurements she can see that one leg is smaller than the other. This can be due to muscle loss after the injury.

Electric Stimulation Machine

This machine is used during muscle treatment. She will use this to send signals through the nerves in the muscle to make the muscle contract. Since the patient is injured, the brain has lost the power to make the muscle work alone. This machine will get the nerves used to working normally again. Mrs. Boone allowed our class to use this machine and actually feel how it works on a real live patient.
