Trip to the Student Recreation Center

BioMed Feild Trip, Monday 12/6, Trama Week

Demonstration

Once we arrived at the Student Recreation Center, there was a demonstration on how to save a drowning victim. The victim, which was a mannequin, had a seizure while swimming. The lifeguard on duty jumped into the water and pulled the victim to the surface, face up. They pulled him out of the water and immediately started CPR. While one lifeguard was doing CPR, the other went and got help.

Once the police were called, the lifeguards did CPR until the fire department and ambulance arrived, having to shock the victim twice. As soon as the firemen arrived, they continued the CPR. They mentioned that you can only do CPR for 20 minutes in order to save the victim. If they do not have a pulse or rhythm in their heartbeat, they will be pronounced dead.

The fire department then tried to use something called a Lucus, this machine provides a mechanical way to do CPR, freeing up someone to help in other ways. The machine was unable to work because of the dummy's thin torso, therefore they had to continue manually.

They escorted the victim out to the elevator and the demonstration ended.

Question and Answers

During the Q&A, we learned about CPR and scene safety. Mostly CPR is most effective when started immediately and is not to help breathe, but to keep blood pumping to the brain cells. They told us about the Lucus and how it works.
